5 reasons your business doesn't appear on Google Maps
If you have a local business and don't show up on Google Maps when people search for you, you are losing customers every day. Here are the most common causes and how to fix them.
Why Google Maps matters so much for local businesses
When someone searches for "dentist near me" or "plumber London", Google shows the map first with the 3 most relevant businesses. That block is called the Local Pack and is the most coveted space on Google for local businesses.
Appearing there costs no advertising money. But it requires having your Google Business profile properly set up and meeting certain criteria. Most businesses have it done badly or simply don't have one at all.
Reason 1: You don't have a Google Business profile
The most basic mistake. If you haven't created your listing on Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business), Google doesn't know you exist as a local business and can't show you.
Creating the profile is free. Go to business.google.com, create your listing and verify your business. Google will send a physical postcard with a verification code within 5โ7 days.
Reason 2: Your listing has incomplete or incorrect information
Google rewards complete listings. If the opening hours, phone number, website, category or description is missing, your listing will lose positions to competitors who have it complete.
Check that you have filled in: exact business name, full address, phone number, website, up-to-date opening hours, main and secondary categories, business description and at least 5 photos.
Reason 3: You have no reviews or very few
Reviews are the most important local ranking factor after relevance. A business with 50 reviews at 4.5 stars ranks above one with 5 reviews at 5 stars.
The most effective strategy: after each successful job, send the client a WhatsApp with the direct link to leave a Google review. 20โ30% of satisfied customers do it if you ask them directly.
Tip: To get the direct link to your reviews, go to your Google Business profile, click "Get more reviews" and copy the short link. That is the link you send to your clients.
Reason 4: Your business and website are not properly aligned
Google cross-references the information on your listing with your website. If the name, address or phone number are different on the website and Google Business, Google loses confidence in your listing and penalises it.
Make sure your name, address and phone (NAP) are exactly the same on your website, on Google Business and in every directory where you are listed.
Reason 5: You don't post updates or respond to reviews
Google Business allows you to post news, offers and events directly on your listing. Active listings that post regularly rank better than abandoned ones.
Also, responding to all reviews โ positive and negative โ shows the business is active and cares about its customers. A professional response to a negative review can turn it into something positive.
Action plan: what to do this week
- Create or complete your Google Business profile to 100%
- Add at least 10 real photos of the business, the team and the services
- Ask your last 10 satisfied customers for reviews
- Verify that your NAP is identical on your website and Google Business
- Post an update or piece of news on your listing
